Visiting Nurse Service is interested in speaking with you about any of the following positions:

Registered Nurse:

Candidates must have an A.S. degree although a B.S. is preferred, a minimum of one year of nursing experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience and a current New York State nursing license. To be successful in this position, candidates should possess excellent problem solving, attention to detail and organizational skills.

Licensed Practical Nurse:

This position requires completion of a course of study approved by the NYS Education Department as qualifying for Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). LPN license and current registration is required. LPN must be knowledgeable in current routine nursing practices and demonstrate the application of those practices, procedures and techniques. LPN must have the ability to lift and transfer patients using appropriate body mechanics and lifting equipment.

Home Health Aide/Personal Care Aide:

Candidates must possess excellent interpersonal skills. This position requires a High School Diploma or GED and a current certificate through a NYS certified home health aide training program that encompasses 65 hours of training and 30 hours of supervised clinical experience in patients’ homes or equivalent training as described in the NYS Public Health Law.

Medical Social Worker:

This position requires a MSW degree from an accredited program and 2 years experience in medical social work, home health or services to the aged or ill required. A current license registered or certified by the State Board of Social Work Examiners is also required. To be successful in this position, candidates must be experienced in family assessments.

Dietitian:

Candidate must be a graduate of an accredited program in nutritional therapy; registered or eligible for registration by the American Dietetic Association or have the equivalent of such training and experience. A minimum of one year of clinical experience is required and candidate must understand the principles, techniques and practices of nutritional therapy including pathological conditions, socioeconomic factors, and cultural background and their effects on the patient’s food habits and nutritional status.

Physical Therapist:

Candidate must be a graduate of an accredited program in physical therapy and be licensed and currently registered by NYS Education Department as a Physical Therapist. This position also requires a minimum of two years of supervised clinical experience. Candidate must understand the principles, techniques, and practices of physical therapy. The successful candidate must also understand the operation and maintenance of apparatus and equipment used in physical therapy and the pathological conditions and socioeconomic factors affecting a patient’s disabilities.

Occupational Therapist:

Candidate must be a graduate of an accredited program in occupational therapy and be licensed and currently registered by the NYS Education Department as an Occupational Therapist. This position also requires a minimum of one year of supervised clinical experience. Excellent knowledge of the principles, techniques and practices of occupational therapy and of the operation and maintenance of apparatus and equipment used in occupational therapy is essential.

Speech Language Pathologist:

Candidate must have graduated from an accredited program in speech language pathology, be licensed and currently registered by the NYS Education Department as a Speech Language Pathologist. At least two years of supervised clinical experience is required. Candidate must have an excellent understanding of the principles, techniques and practices of speech pathology and of the pathological conditions and socioeconomic factors affecting speech disabilities.

Candidates for employment must be able to pass a criminal background check, motor vehicle check and provide proof of a valid NYS Drivers License and current auto insurance certificate. Candidates for clinical positions must also have a reliable vehicle for transportation to and from work assignments and are required to have a yearly PPD and physical.

Since 1985, Visiting Nurse Service of Ithaca and Tompkins County has operated as a private, not-for-profit home health care agency governed by a voluntary Board of Directors.  The Board is made up of representatives from various segments of the community and is responsible for setting policy and appointing the agency’s Executive Director. Terms of service are for 3-years with the ability to stay on for a second term.  Officer positions: President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary may be filled by a member after serving 1-year on the Board.

In addition to Board roles, Visiting Nurse Service offers other volunteer opportunities such as:
